Become the partner you wish you had.

How would you rescue your partner if they were unresponsive after a leader fall and past the halfway mark on the rope? A rock fall damages your only rope and incapacitates your follower, how do you descend multiple rope lengths? Can you talk yourself through these (basic) self-rescue scenarios? Think you could do it for real with whatever happens to be on your harness? Would you bet your life on it?

Hold. Lift. Lower. With a couple of powerful tools for each of these simple actions, you can create versatile and creative solutions to any of the infinite situations you may find yourself in the vertical world. I’ll teach you the tools and how to break down the problems, you’ll work out the solutions and put them into practice with real loads, on a real cliff. The scenarios will be increasingly complex and constantly changing. See the curriculum tab for more details.

It’s time to get serious about self-rescue.

Itinerary

Week Before: We will meet over Zoom for an hour or so to do introductory material that is more discussion-based. This will allow us to focus our in-person time on hands-on practical training. No other Self-Rescue Course offers anything like this! You’ll get a little optional homework if you’re really stoked.

Day 1: This day will be mostly spent on or near the ground at a climbing area. We’ll introduce some of the tools to Hold, Lift, and Lower (the three foundational actions) and common combinations of those tools that accomplish an array of tasks. We’ll all get some practice utilizing these combinations to complete every function you would ever need in a rescue. This practice will be lightly weighted and allow for many varied repetitions. We’ll wrap up before sunset and folks can head back to their campground or to town for the night.

Day 2: We’ll jump right into the deep end with vertical, weighted scenarios. This is where the rubber meets the road, all sorts of new issues arise with full loads and you’ll learn to anticipate, avoid, and overcome. All mock victims will be on a separate safety line. We will debrief each scenario as a group and learn from each other’s mistakes and successes. We will keep switching up scenarios and adding new and challenging variables. The goal isn’t to master any one task but to get improve our problem-solving and creativity with these tools. The day will finish with your head spinning.

Extra Day!: This is totally optional and would incur an additional cost but if you’re free after the course we could do an additional day of private instruction or go rest our brains by having some fun on nearby multi-pitch climbs. Contact me for details about this!

Learning the below tools is the easy part. The focus of this clinic is to learn to apply them in hands-on scenarios to effectively rescue unconscious leaders or followers and to get them to the ground from multipitch heights.

All skills will be improvised which is to say we will not be using specific rescue gear such as pulleys, rope clamps, etc.
