Big Chief, located near Truckee, is a volcanic crag offering over a hundred sport climbing routes. The rock is volcanic tuff, like Oregon’s Smith Rock, a unique option for the California climber! Routes range from beginner-friendly 5.6 slabs to pumpy 5.12 test pieces, making it a versatile spot for climbers of all levels.
The crag is divided into several walls, each with its own character. The approach is a short but uphill hike, about 10–15 minutes from the parking area. Climbers will appreciate the spectacular views of the surrounding forest and peaks, especially in the late afternoon light.
Big Chief is a seasonal area, best visited in summer, or fall. Winter snow can limit access in the spring.
